The Vatican has issued its first official reaction following recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump directed at Pope Leo XIV, with a senior Vatican official suggesting that the American leader is unable to engage in traditional dialogue with the pontiff.

In a statement posted on X, Father Antonio Spadaro said Trump’s rhetoric reflects an attempt to engage the Pope on terms of political power, while the pontiff speaks in a fundamentally different moral and spiritual language.

“Trump does not debate Leo: he asks him to retreat into a language he can dominate. But the Pope speaks another language, one that refuses to be reduced to the grammar of force, security, and national interest,” Spadaro wrote.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American pope, has recently become more vocal regarding global conflicts, particularly the ongoing tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. Last week, he described aggressive rhetoric and threats against Iran as “truly unacceptable” and urged restraint and diplomacy.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Trump said he was “not a fan” of the Pope, criticizing him as “too liberal” and accusing him of being weak on crime and foreign policy. He also claimed the Pope’s positions align with “radical left” viewpoints and suggested he is overly accommodating toward Iran.

The exchange highlights growing ideological tensions between the White House and the Vatican over issues of war, diplomacy, and global security.
