Tensions were reported this morning in Niš, where students and citizens gathered to protest the visit of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić.
The protesters were stopped by a police cordon approximately 300 meters from the National Theatre, where a meeting of the Main Board of the Serbian Progressive Party was being held.
After police prevented them from passing, the protesters attempted to reach the theater via another route but were once again met by riot police. Some managed to bypass the cordon, leading to clashes and people running toward the theater building, while the Gendarmerie was also deployed in the streets.
The crowd used whistles and vuvuzelas while chanting against Vučić. Police urged those present not to attempt to break through the cordon, explaining that a gathering attended by protected individuals was taking place nearby.
During the tensions, several eggs were also thrown at police officers. No injuries or arrests have been reported.
