Japan was struck on Monday by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake, prompting authorities to issue a tsunami warning with waves expected to reach up to 3 meters.
The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake hit the country’s northeastern coast.
Tsunami waves are forecast to reach the prefecture of Iwate Prefecture, as well as parts of Hokkaido Prefecture and Aomori Prefecture.
In some other northeastern coastal areas, waves of up to 1 meter are also expected.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as coastal evacuations and safety measures are being considered.
