Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said Serbia must clearly communicate its positions and interests internationally as he continues his visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly.
Vučić made the remarks after attending a reception hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, where he met with the presidents of Finland, Romania, the Czech Republic and Poland, as well as the Austrian chancellor.
“It is important for Serbia to clearly state its positions everywhere, present its interests and talk to everyone about issues that determine the future of our countries and international relations,” Vučić wrote on Instagram.
“We continue to pursue a responsible and independent policy, protecting Serbia’s interests and strengthening its position in the world,” he added.
During his stay in New York, Vučić also held a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Following that meeting, he said he believed Serbia would remain on its path toward European Union membership regardless of the outcome of the country’s upcoming elections.
“I had the opportunity during a brief conversation with Ursula von der Leyen to express my sincere gratitude for everything she has done for Serbia in previous years. I believe that Serbia, regardless of the election outcome, will accelerate its path toward full membership in the European Union,” Vučić wrote.
Vučić is in New York for the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, where he is holding a series of meetings with international officials and leaders.
