Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has condemned Russia for what he described as “absolute cynicism,” following a wave of missile and drone strikes launched shortly after Moscow’s calls for a symbolic ceasefire to mark the May 9 anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany.

According to the Ukrainian leader, the overnight Russian assaults primarily targeted the nation’s critical energy infrastructure. The strikes resulted in the deaths of at least five people and left dozens of others wounded.

“Propaganda vs. Reality”

In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), Zelensky highlighted the stark contrast between the Kremlin’s diplomatic rhetoric and its military actions.

“It is absolute cynicism to call for a ceasefire for the purpose of holding propaganda celebrations while launching such missile and drone attacks every single day,” Zelensky stated.

The President emphasized that the responsibility for ending the hostilities lies solely with Moscow. He noted that while Russia possesses the power to halt its fire at any moment—which would effectively end the war and Ukraine’s necessary military responses—true peace requires concrete action rather than hollow gestures.

Targeting the Power Grid

The latest aerial campaign is part of a broader, ongoing Russian strategy to disable Ukraine’s energy grid. These systematic attacks have caused widespread blackouts and placed immense pressure on civilian life across the country.

Zelensky reiterated that Ukraine remains committed to achieving a just peace but insisted that the international community must recognize the deceptive nature of Russia’s recent overtures. “Peace is necessary, and real steps are needed to achieve it. Ukraine will act accordingly,” he added.
