Iliana Yotova has announced that she will grant a mandate to form a new government to the Progressive Bulgaria party (PB), associated with former president Rumen Radev, which she says won the recent parliamentary elections.

Yotova said the mandate will be handed over on May 7, adding that the party has assured her it is ready to propose a governing cabinet.

“I will give the mandate to form a government on May 7,” she said, expressing hope that the parliament will approve the new government through a vote of confidence on May 8.

The Progressive Bulgaria party reportedly won the elections with 44.6% of the vote, securing enough seats to potentially avoid coalition negotiations and ending a period of political instability marked by eight elections in five years.

Radev, described as an eurosceptic and former fighter pilot, has previously opposed further military support for Ukraine in its war with Russia. He stepped down from the presidency in January to run in parliamentary elections after the previous government resigned following mass protests in December.
