U.S. President Donald J. Trump has announced a historic three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, set to take effect tomorrow, May 9. The pause in hostilities is intended to honor “Victory Day,” a significant historical milestone for both nations, and serves as a major breakthrough in ongoing peace negotiations.

According to the President’s statement released on Truth Social, the agreement includes a total suspension of all combat activities and a substantial humanitarian exchange of 1,000 prisoners of war from each side.

Details of the Agreement

The ceasefire is scheduled for May 9, 10, and 11. President Trump noted that he made the request for a temporary truce directly to President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, both of whom have reportedly agreed to the terms.

“The celebration in Russia is for Victory Day, but likewise in Ukraine, as they were also a big part and a great factor of World War II,” Trump stated. “Hopefully, this is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war.”

Path to Peace

The President emphasized that high-level talks to permanently end the conflict—the largest in Europe since 1945—are intensifying. He signaled optimism that the two nations are “getting closer and closer every day” to a comprehensive resolution.

While both Moscow and Kyiv have previously accused one another of truce violations, the involvement of the U.S. executive branch in brokering this specific window marks a new phase in the diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.
