Albania’s Democratic Party (DP) held its latest national protest this evening in front of the Prime Minister’s Office, continuing a series of demonstrations aimed at the government of Prime Minister Edi Rama.
The gathering began at approximately 19:30 at the “Dëshmorët e Kombit” Boulevard. In a departure from previous rallies, organizers did not set up a traditional speaking podium. According to RTSH journalist Anisa Kadesha, the opposition adopted a “marching strategy” through the streets of Tirana, though the specific route was kept confidential by party leadership until the movement began.
Protest Strategy and Atmosphere
The shift toward a march follows previous demonstrations where protesters engaged in symbolic acts of defiance against state institutions. Despite unfavorable weather conditions and ongoing rainfall, a significant number of participants gathered following calls for “massive participation” from DP Chairman Sali Berisha and other opposition deputies.
“The strategy seems to be a protest march focused on traversing Tirana’s streets,” Kadesha reported. “The Democratic Party has remained tight-lipped regarding the exact path and the specific institutions that will be targeted during the march.”
The protest is expected to last between two and three hours, concluding with a message from Sali Berisha, likely delivered from the Democratic Party headquarters.
Core Grievances
The opposition’s platform for this national protest centers on several critical issues currently facing Albania:
- Corruption: Allegations of high-level government graft.
- Economic Crisis: Rising prices and the increasing cost of living.
- Demographics: Concerns over mass emigration and the “brain drain.”
- Governance: General dissatisfaction with the current administration and claims of international isolation.
Security Measures and Traffic
The State Police have implemented rigorous security measures around the Prime Minister’s Office and government buildings.
- Road Closures: Partial blocking of “Dëshmorët e Kombit” Boulevard and adjacent streets.
- Parking Restrictions: Movement and parking have been heavily restricted in the city center to ensure public order.
As of this evening, the situation remains fluid as protesters continue their march through the capital’s main arteries.
