Augustin Palokaj, Brussels correspondent for KOHA, reported that today’s meeting between European Union foreign ministers and their Western Balkan counterparts was dominated by the unfolding political crisis in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The primary catalyst for the discussions is the potential resignation of the High Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt.
In a live broadcast on KTV’s “tre8tre,” Palokaj noted that the threat of Schmidt’s departure has sparked significant concern among EU officials regarding the regional stability of the Balkans.
Bosnia and Herzegovina: A State of “Dramatic” Developments
Palokaj described the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina as nearly “dramatic,” emphasizing that the High Representative plays a pivotal role in maintaining the country’s functionality.
“The potential resignation of Christian Schmidt could create political destabilization. The intervention of the High Representative is constantly required to overcome the institutional blockades that frequently paralyze the country,” Palokaj explained.
Stalled Progress on the Kosovo-Serbia Dialogue
Beyond Bosnia, the meeting addressed the ongoing dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, foreign interference in the region, and deeper EU-Western Balkan integration. However, the outlook for immediate progress remains grim.
- Agreement in Principle: EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, indicated that both parties had previously agreed to organize a high-level meeting, though the timeline has since shifted.
- A “Lost Year”: Kosovo’s acting Foreign Minister, Glauk Konjufca, expressed skepticism, suggesting that 2026 would likely yield no significant results.
- Lack of Trust: Konjufca emphasized that the “good faith” necessary for dialogue is non-existent. He stated that trust cannot be restored while Serbia fails to take action against those responsible for the Banjska terrorist attack and continues its efforts to destabilize Kosovo, allegedly in coordination with Russia.

What’s Next?

While Kaja Kallas remains hopeful for future meetings, Kosovar leadership appears focused on the 2027 horizon, citing a current environment that is not conducive to meaningful diplomatic breakthroughs.
