U.S. President Donald Trump is reportedly considering a return to active military operations against Iran, following deep frustration over the current state of diplomatic negotiations and the ongoing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a report published Monday by CNN, the temporary cessation of military actions—which has been in place since April—is now under serious review by the White House.
The “Life Support” Ceasefire
President Trump has been increasingly vocal about his dissatisfaction with Tehran’s response to a U.S.-led peace proposal. On Sunday, he labeled Iran’s counter-offer “totally unacceptable.”
Speaking at the White House on Monday, the President used a stark medical metaphor to describe the fragility of the current truce:
“I would say the ceasefire is on massive life support, where the doctor walks in and says, ‘Sir, your loved one has approximately a 1 percent chance of living,'” Trump remarked.
Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz
Central to the President’s frustration is the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iranian forces. The blockade has caused unprecedented disruptions in the global energy market, as the waterway is a primary transit point for nearly 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.
Internal Pressure and Diplomatic Warnings
Sources within the administration indicate a divide in the Pentagon:
- The Aggressive Stance: Some officials are pushing for authorized “targeted strikes” designed to weaken Iran’s leverage and force a more compliant stance at the negotiating table.
- The Diplomatic Stance: Other advisors continue to urge for additional windows of diplomacy to avoid a full-scale regional escalation.
Regional intermediaries, including Pakistan, have reportedly warned Tehran that Trump’s patience has reached its limit. However, these warnings have largely been ignored by Iranian leadership.
Iran’s Defiant Response
In response to the potential shift in U.S. policy, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf issued a stern warning via social media. He stated that the Iranian military is ready to give an “unforgettable lesson” to any aggressor.
“Wrong strategies and wrong decisions always produce wrong results,” Qalibaf posted on X (formerly Twitter), adding that Iran is prepared for “all options” and that its adversaries “will be surprised.” He insisted that the only path forward is the acceptance of Tehran’s 14-point peace proposal.
Next Steps
While President Trump met with his national security team on Monday to discuss these options, sources suggest a final decision on resuming military operations is unlikely to be made before the President departs for his scheduled visit to China on Tuesday afternoon.
