Ukraine was hit by a wave of coordinated Russian aerial assaults on Wednesday morning, described by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as “one of the longest and most massive attacks” since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
The strikes, which lasted several hours, utilized a sophisticated mix of suicide drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles designed to overwhelm Ukraine’s air defense systems. The bombardment spanned the entire country, from the capital, Kyiv, to the western city of Lviv near the Polish border, and the southern port of Odesa.
Casualties Reported Across Multiple Regions
At least six civilians were killed and dozens more injured as the strikes targeted residential areas and infrastructure.
- Kherson Region: A woman was killed in the town of Bilozerka after a Russian drone struck a civilian bus.
- Rivne Region: Governor Oleksandr Koval reported three deaths and four injuries following a drone strike in the western province.
- Kharkiv Region: In the Zolochiv area, a 60-year-old man was killed by an FPV (First-Person View) drone. The attack also caused significant damage to local homes.
- Zaporizhzhia Region: A 76-year-old man lost his life when a guided bomb struck an agricultural enterprise, causing massive structural damage.
Strategic Escalation
President Zelenskyy stated that while Ukrainian forces successfully intercepted a significant portion of the incoming projectiles, the sheer intensity and duration of the morning raid mark a “clear escalation” in the war. The use of varied weaponry suggests a Russian strategy to deplete Ukrainian interceptor missile stockpiles.
Cross-Border Strikes and Russian Claims
The conflict continues to spill across the border into Russian territory. Local officials in Russia’s Bryansk and Belgorod regions reported civilian injuries and property damage following Ukrainian drone counter-attacks.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed its forces shot down 286 Ukrainian drones overnight across several regions, including Kursk, Bryansk, and Rostov, as well as over the Black and Azov Seas. In Moscow-controlled areas of the Kherson region, Russian-appointed officials also reported civilian deaths resulting from drone strikes.
The massive scale of today’s attacks highlights the precarious security situation for millions of civilians as the frontline continues to experience high-intensity combat and aerial warfare.
