Dragan Đilas, the president of the opposition Freedom and Justice Party (SSP), launched a scathing critique against President Aleksandar Vučić on Wednesday, accusing the ruling regime of completely derailing Serbia’s path toward European integration.
Đilas asserted that while neighboring countries are making aggressive, historic strides toward European Union accession, Serbia has decoupled from its regional peers, transforming from a frontrunner into a systemic problem in the eyes of Brussels.
A Stark Regional Contrast: Montenegro and Albania Surge Ahead
In a statement released by the SSP, Đilas contrasted Serbia’s current diplomatic isolation with the rapid legislative advancements of its immediate neighbors in the Western Balkans.

The contrast is particularly glaring following Brussels’ confirmation this week that Albania has officially secured its positive Interim Benchmark Assessment Report (IBAR), clearing the way for accelerated cluster openings. Meanwhile, Montenegro is actively working toward completing its entire accession framework.
Dragan Đilas on the Balkan Divergence: “While Montenegro is bringing its negotiations with the European Union to a close, and Albania receives its positive IBAR to rapidly advance toward full membership, Serbia under Aleksandar Vučić remains firmly stuck at the absolute bottom of the region.”
The Cost of Regime Survival: Corruption vs. Rule of Law
The opposition leader argued that Serbia’s European freeze is a direct, calculated byproduct of the ruling progressive (SNS) structure. For Serbia to authentically renew its EU integration, Đilas noted that Vučić would have to dismantle the entire network of state capture that maintains his political dominance.

A Stolen Future Masked by State Propaganda
Đilas concluded his address by warning that history will remember Vučić as the leader who stripped Serbian citizens of their modern economic and geopolitical potential, substituting European structural development with state-sponsored media manipulation and a domestic culture of political intimidation.
Đilas on the Path Forward: “Instead of a progressive European future, the citizens of Serbia are subjected to a daily environment of domestic violence and aggressive regime propaganda. To turn Serbia back toward the West, an immediate change of government and the complete exit of Vučić from the political landscape is an absolute necessity.”
The SSP reiterated that its foundational party program remains firmly committed to implementing all necessary institutional reforms to prepare Serbia for comprehensive EU membership by 2030—a target it claims can easily be met once democratic norms are fully restored in Belgrade.
