Kaja Kallas has stated that the European Union will not act as a neutral mediator between Ukraine and Russia, emphasizing that the bloc stands firmly on Kyiv’s side in the ongoing war.
Speaking at an informal meeting of EU foreign ministers in Lemesos, Cyprus, Kallas said the European Union does not aim to replace the United States in peace negotiations but rather to complement American diplomatic efforts.
“Europe cannot be neutral between Russia and Ukraine because we are on Ukraine’s side and we are defending our security interests,” she stated.
She added that any EU involvement in peace talks should focus on balancing the negotiation process and encouraging concessions from the Russian side, without taking over the leading mediating role.
Kallas also noted that EU foreign ministers have agreed that European efforts must remain aligned with those of the United States rather than replace them.
Meanwhile, Ukraine has urged the EU to focus on concrete and implementable steps, including security measures at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and the establishment of humanitarian corridors.
