Iceland’s parliament has voted in favor of holding a referendum on August 29 to decide whether the country should restart accession negotiations with the European Union.

According to the Icelandic government’s plan, the process would unfold in two stages and could pave the way for Iceland to join the EU later this decade.

Iceland previously suspended its EU membership negotiations in 2013, but economic developments and the current geopolitical climate — including the war in Ukraine — have renewed interest in joining the bloc.

If voters support reopening the negotiations, a second referendum would later be required to approve the final membership terms.
