NATO has reacted after a residential building in Romania was struck by a drone during Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure near the border.
In its statement, the Western military alliance strongly condemned Russia’s actions, describing them as irresponsible.
“Early this morning, a residential building in Romania was hit by a drone while Russia attacked Ukrainian infrastructure near the border. We condemn Russia’s recklessness,” NATO said in its response.
The alliance emphasized that it will continue strengthening its defense against all threats, including drone attacks.
Romania is a member of both NATO and the European Union, Sky News reports.
Under Article 5, an attack on one member is considered an attack on the entire alliance. However, the situation is not that straightforward.
When a NATO member activates Article 5, allies may provide any form of assistance they deem necessary in response to the situation.
This does not automatically mean military assistance, as each ally independently decides what action is required.
The assistance is then coordinated collectively within the alliance.
Article 5 has only been invoked once in history, following the 9/11 attacks, in support of the United States in 2001.
