NATO is planning to reduce the number of troops in its KFOR mission in Kosovo, coinciding with the 27th anniversary of the alliance’s entry into the country and the start of its peacekeeping mission.

NATO Commander for Europe, U.S. General Alexus Grynkewich, announced that an “optimization” of NATO’s presence in Kosovo will be carried out as a result of the continuous improvement of the security situation in recent times and the increasing responsibilities taken on by local security institutions.

“NATO and KFOR remain fully committed to security in Kosovo. It is precisely thanks to this commitment that the security situation in Kosovo has improved, as security organizations in Kosovo have increased their capacities. The existing conditions create opportunities for further optimization of the size and presence of KFOR,” the NATO commander said.
