U.S. President Donald Trump has said that the United States continues to shoulder the largest share of NATO’s defense burden, spending significantly more on defense than any other member of the alliance.
According to Trump, the United States has spent approximately $999 billion on defense, far exceeding the contributions of other NATO allies.
He also cited defense spending figures for several member states, stating that the United Kingdom spent around $90.5 billion, France $66.5 billion, Italy $48.8 billion, and Poland $44.3 billion.
Trump criticized the distribution of defense spending during the 2014–2025 period, arguing that the current burden-sharing arrangement is unequal and unsustainable.
His remarks revive the long-running debate within NATO over equitable defense spending, an issue that has frequently been a source of tension between the United States and several European allies.
Throughout his political career, Trump has consistently urged NATO members to increase their defense expenditures to ensure a fairer distribution of the alliance’s collective security responsibilities.
