Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said her country is prepared to defend “every inch” of its territory after U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his interest in bringing Greenland under American control.

Speaking at the NATO Summit in Ankara, Frederiksen reiterated that Greenland is not for sale and stressed that Denmark’s sovereignty is not open for discussion.

“We will defend the Kingdom of Denmark. We are ready to defend every inch of NATO, including our own territory,” she said.

Earlier in the day, Trump described Greenland as a matter of strategic importance to the United States.

“Greenland is a big issue for us. We need it for the defense of the world, not just the United States. It is very important. This does not help Denmark,” the U.S. president said.

Frederiksen responded by emphasizing that “we are a sovereign state, and we expect everyone to respect our territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

She also underlined that Article 5 of the NATO Treaty, which guarantees the collective defense of member states, remains Denmark’s strongest security guarantee.
