European Union ambassadors failed to reach an agreement on the contents of the bloc’s 21st package of sanctions against Russia during an extraordinary meeting of the Committee of Permanent Representatives (Coreper) on July 12, according to Ukrainska Pravda.
EU member states’ ambassadors in Brussels were unable to finalize the new sanctions package, leaving the matter to EU foreign ministers, who are expected to continue discussions on July 13.
One EU source told the publication that, despite significant progress, Coreper was unable to approve the 21st sanctions package. Negotiations will continue on Monday.
According to the same sources, several member states still have reservations about key elements of the package, including a proposed entry ban into the EU for Russian military personnel, restrictions on the fishing sector, and measures affecting the oil and gas industries.
The outstanding issues will be discussed during the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council in Brussels on July 13, attended by the foreign ministers of the bloc’s member states.
