The Municipality of Vushtrri has officially commemorated the 102nd anniversary of the Resistance of “Arbëria e Vogël” (Little Arbëria), a heroic chapter in Albanian history led by the legendary national figures Azem and Shote Galica.
In a public statement, local authorities in Vushtrri honored the milestone, highlighting the resistance as one of the most glorious and significant chapters of the national liberation movement. The municipality emphasized the extraordinary bravery, resilience, and ultimate sacrifices of those who took up arms to defend their land.

Historical Context: What was “Arbëria e Vogël”?
During the early 1920s, the Kaçak Movement—led by military commander Azem Galica alongside his wife Qerime Radisheva (historically known as Shote Galica)—successfully liberated a pocket of territory in the Drenica region from the occupying Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes (later Yugoslavia).
Known as “Arbëria e Vogël” (Little Arbëria), this liberated zone functioned as an autonomous enclave of Albanian self-governance. The resistance reached its tragic peak in July 1924, when Yugoslav forces launched a massive military offensive utilizing heavy artillery. Azem Galica was mortally wounded during the defense and died on July 15, 1924. Following his death, Shote Galica took over as supreme commander, continuing to lead guerrilla operations against overwhelming odds.
Today, local representatives and citizens alike expressed profound gratitude to all the historical fighters who laid down their lives, cementing the anniversary as a crucial date of remembrance in Kosovo’s cultural calendar.
