A Serbian nationalist movement has publicly called for the arrest of former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA/UÇK) by publishing lists containing names and personal information of individuals it claims served in KLA brigades.
The move comes as Serbian authorities continue to detain Kosovo Albanians at border crossings under allegations of war crimes, raising concerns among former KLA members and their families.
Fatmir Sopi, Deputy Chairman of the Organization of KLA War Veterans (OVL-UÇK), said that such lists are nothing new and that Serbia has maintained similar arrest lists for years.
“This is not a new development. Serbia has always maintained lists targeting former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army, particularly its commanders. We were opposing sides in a war. We fought a liberation war, while Serbia waged an occupation campaign against our country,” Sopi stated.
He described the publication of such lists as unnecessary and politically motivated, especially at a time when dialogue and normalization are officially being discussed.
Sopi also referred to recent controversial statements by Serbian officials, arguing that they demonstrate the persistence of hostile attitudes toward Kosovo Albanians.
The veterans’ representative issued a strong warning to former KLA fighters and Kosovo citizens, urging them to avoid entering Serbian territory.
“We have repeatedly appealed to former members of the Kosovo Liberation Army not to travel through Serbia under any circumstances. They may face arrests, threats, and serious consequences. We urge not only former KLA members, but all citizens, to exercise caution when traveling to or staying in Serbia,” he said.
According to Sopi, even ordinary citizens can become targets of accusations and legal proceedings, creating insecurity for travelers.
He further called on Kosovo’s institutions and diplomatic representatives to raise the issue with international organizations and partner countries in order to protect Kosovo citizens and ensure freedom of movement.
“The state must act through diplomatic channels and international organizations to prevent such situations and to safeguard the rights and security of its citizens,” Sopi emphasized.
