The Kosovo Security Force (FSK) has deployed specialized units to respond to the large fire that erupted at the Sferkë landfill in the Municipality of Peja, following an order from FSK Commander Lieutenant General Bashkim Jashari.
According to the FSK, the deployment came after receiving a request from the Situation Center of the Secretariat of Kosovo’s Security Council, which reported a major fire spreading through the landfill.
Following an immediate assessment of the risks and available response capabilities, Commander Jashari ordered the mobilization of specialized National Guard units, which have now been deployed to the affected area.
The operation aims to contain the fire, prevent toxic environmental pollution, and minimize potential risks to public health.
“The operation began immediately to isolate the fire, prevent toxic environmental contamination, and avoid cascading effects on public health. Our units are working in close coordination with central and local authorities, emergency services, and the local population to restore the situation to normal as quickly as possible,” the FSK said.
The Kosovo Security Force reaffirmed its commitment to serving all citizens in accordance with its constitutional mission and responsibilities.
The landfill fire had previously prompted public concern and criticism, including a reaction from LDK MP-elect Hykmete Bajrami, who raised alarm over the environmental and health risks caused by the burning waste.
