The European Union’s Special Representative for the Belgrade–Pristina Dialogue, Peter Sorensen, has explained why negotiations in Brussels are conducted largely behind closed doors.
In an interview with the Serbian newspaper Danas, Sorensen said confidentiality is a normal and necessary part of sensitive diplomatic negotiations and has been an integral element of the normalization dialogue since its beginning.
“Confidentiality is a normal and necessary part of sensitive diplomatic negotiations. It has been an integral element of the normalization dialogue from the outset. It allows the parties to explore solutions and compromises,” Sorensen said.
He stressed that, despite the confidential nature of the talks, agreements reached through the dialogue are public, and both sides are fully aware of their respective obligations.
Sorensen also said that public accusations between the parties do not contribute to the normalization process.
“Our focus is on implementation and concrete results,” he said.
