Germany is planning a broad package of measures to strengthen its defenses against drone attacks, cyber interference, and other forms of sabotage linked to Russia.
According to the German newspaper Bild am Sonntag, the plan comes following an unsuccessful drone attack at a German airport last month.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has stated that Russian hybrid attacks have now become part of everyday reality.
“These attacks will increase, but we can defend ourselves and protect ourselves,” Dobrindt was quoted as saying.
According to the report, mobile police capabilities for counter-drone protection will be expanded. Special counter-drone units, which can be rapidly deployed, are expected to be stationed in cities to protect the airspace above critical transport hubs and government areas.
Companies operating critical infrastructure, including energy providers and defense equipment manufacturers, may also be granted legal authority to detect and actively neutralize drones.
The plan also includes the creation of a national cyber shield, known as a “cyberdome.” It would comprise a network of digital sensors designed to detect and prevent attempted cyberattacks.
The German government also intends to expand the use of artificial intelligence-based technologies, biometric facial recognition, and video surveillance, particularly at railway stations, with the aim of identifying individuals suspected of preparing acts of sabotage.
Russia has repeatedly denied accusations of carrying out such operations in Western Europe, including involvement in the drone attack at the German airport.
