The “Fire of Freedom” initiative has concluded in the Karadak Operational Zone, the seventh and final zone of the former Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), with participants calling for justice and freedom for former KLA leaders currently facing proceedings in The Hague.
Former KLA fighters and comrades-in-arms, veterans, families of fallen soldiers and residents of Karadak gathered for the final event, reaffirming a message repeated throughout the initiative’s tour of Kosovo’s seven operational zones: that the KLA’s war was a struggle for freedom and that its history should be preserved with dignity.
Participants in Karadak called for justice and freedom for Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, while honoring the sacrifices of those who fought and died during the 1998–1999 Kosovo war.
The gathering also emphasized solidarity with the former KLA leaders and the values that participants say underpin Kosovo’s freedom.
With the event in Karadak, the “Fire of Freedom” initiative has completed its journey through all seven KLA operational zones, bringing together former fighters, veterans, families of fallen soldiers and citizens around themes of remembrance, solidarity and the demand for justice.
“Seven zones. Seven fires. One war. One history. One demand for justice,” the organization “Liria ka Emër” said in a statement.
The organization added that the next major event will be the “March for Freedom,” scheduled for September 12 at 2 p.m. in Skënderbeu Square in Prishtina.
The initiative has been organized as a public expression of support for the former KLA leaders facing proceedings at the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague and as an effort to preserve public remembrance of the KLA’s wartime legacy.
