The Organization of KLA War Veterans (OVL-KLA) has reacted to the verdict against Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Rexhep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi, categorically rejecting the decision of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague.
In its statement, the organization said the verdict “strikes at the just liberation war of the KLA” and, according to the veterans, deeply hurts the families who gave their sons and daughters for Kosovo’s freedom.
“The KLA was never a criminal enterprise. It was the organized resistance of a people facing occupation, expulsion and massacres,” the OVL-KLA said.
The organization argued that, in its view, the sacrifice of the KLA was part of the path that led to Kosovo’s statehood, sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
The OVL-KLA also said that no court decision can rewrite the history of Kosovo’s liberation war, maintaining that the war and the sacrifices of those who fought for Kosovo’s freedom remain an integral part of the country’s history.
The veterans reiterated their longstanding position that the Specialist Chambers and the Hague proceedings were political. They described the verdict as a “shame for international justice” and said it would remain, in their view, a stain on the way the KLA war and the sacrifice of the people of Kosovo have been treated.
