The US State Department has welcomed Serbian citizens’ participation in the parliamentary elections and expressed its readiness to continue strengthening cooperation with Serbia’s newly elected parliament.
In a statement to Radio Free Europe, a State Department spokesperson said Washington was aware of the preliminary election results, including former Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s acknowledgment of defeat.
“We look forward to continuing and further advancing our partnership with the newly elected members of Serbia’s National Assembly and the people of Serbia, building on the momentum achieved over the past year, including through the launch of the Strategic Dialogue,” the spokesperson said.
According to preliminary results from the October 25 elections, the Students’ List won 52.54% of the votes cast, while United Serbia, the coalition associated with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) and Vučić, received 39.29%.
Vučić acknowledged the defeat and congratulated the Students’ List, bringing an end to 14 years of political dominance by the SNS-led camp.
The election outcome marks a significant shift in Serbia’s political landscape, with attention now turning to the formation of a new government and the country’s future domestic and foreign policy direction.
The United States and Serbia launched a Strategic Dialogue in mid-July to deepen bilateral cooperation. As part of the initiative, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on energy infrastructure and regional energy security.
The meeting that formally opened the dialogue on July 17 was led by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Washington’s latest statement signals its intention to maintain engagement with Serbia’s new parliamentary leadership as the country enters a new political chapter.
