Serbia’s student movement has called for the resignations of Radio Television of Serbia (RTS) Director General, his deputy and the broadcaster’s news editors, demanding the appointment of an interim management team.

In an open letter addressed to RTS management, the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media (REM) Council and the National Assembly, the students stressed that citizens have the right to accurate, comprehensive and impartial information.

They called for institutional accountability and for the public broadcaster to be freed from political influence.

“We demand the immediate resignations of the director general, his deputy and the news editorial team. We are calling for interim management to be proposed through an agreement between the Students’ List and representative RTS trade unions, with appointments made in accordance with the law,” the students said.

The movement emphasized that the public broadcaster must serve citizens rather than political interests.

Demands for REM and Parliament

The students also called on REM to act independently, make its decisions public and explain its handling of the case involving Informer, a pro-government media outlet.

“We demand a public and reasoned response within seven days of receiving the letter,” they said.

In their message to the National Assembly, the students also pledged to advocate for filling vacant positions on the REM Council through a lawful and transparent process based on candidates’ professional qualifications and independence.

The demands place the governance of Serbia’s public broadcaster, media regulation and political influence over news coverage at the center of the student movement’s latest initiative.
