The death toll from the collision between two high-speed trains in Madrid, Spain, has risen to 64, Reuters reports. The figure was announced by the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha.
The president of Castilla-La Mancha, Emiliano García-Page, said emergency teams were continuing to search through the wreckage of the trains for additional victims, warning that the death toll was expected to rise.
“Unfortunately, we expect the number of victims to increase. This is the only concern that truly matters at this moment,” he said.
García-Page said all available emergency and healthcare resources had been mobilized, with assistance also being provided by neighbouring regions.
He added that around 30 people were being treated for minor injuries, approximately 50 others had sustained injuries of varying severity, and a smaller number had been classified as being in critical condition.
