Despite the QUINT states and NATO not supporting any changes to the current status of the bridge in Mitrovica, Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, insists that the Ibar Bridge must be opened.

After meeting with the ambassadors of the QUINT states and the EU, Kurti stated that freedom of movement and the rule of law do not threaten peace and security.

“Consultations and coordination continue. As stated in the European Union’s plan for the revitalization of the bridge, the Mitrovica Bridge over the Ibar will become a symbol of the normalization of relations in Kosovo. The same plan states that ‘its revitalization will greatly contribute to facilitating contacts between all citizens of North and South Mitrovica and thus will contribute to exchanges and understanding.’ Therefore, the bridge must be opened. It serves everyone and is not against anyone. Freedom of movement and the rule of law do not endanger peace and security; on the contrary,” reads a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office.

Kurti presented to the ambassadors the Government’s plan for opening the bridge over the Ibar River, which, according to him, “includes tests for the structural stability of the bridge, risk assessments and risks from natural disasters, visual revitalization of the bridge with access for everyone, discussions with citizens and interest groups, as well as a comprehensive information campaign on the benefits and objectives of opening the bridge.”

Kurti added that the Government supports free movement, symbolized by the Ibar Bridge.

“The bridge is a symbol of free movement, a fundamental value and freedom of the European Union. The bridge is a symbol of integration, a joint effort between Kosovo and our partners.”
