Germany will head to the polls on February 23 following the collapse of Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s center-left coalition, reports the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPA). Bloomberg has also reported that Scholz’s Social Democrats and opposition lawmakers reached an agreement to hold early federal elections on this date. According to Bloomberg, government officials familiar with the discussions, who requested anonymity due to the confidential planning, confirmed these details.

The governing coalition disbanded on November 6 when Chancellor Scholz dismissed his Finance Minister, paving the way for snap elections and triggering political upheaval in Europe’s largest economy. This development came only hours after Donald Trump won the U.S. presidential election.
