Russian forces have launched what is being described as the “largest air attack” in months on Ukraine, targeting essential energy infrastructure just as freezing temperatures set in. Explosions were reported early Sunday across Kyiv and several other cities, marking a significant escalation since the last major strike in August.
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that the widespread missile and drone attacks were aimed at “peaceful cities, sleeping civilians, and critical infrastructure.” The strikes are part of a continued Russian campaign to damage Ukraine’s power grid, causing long blackouts and exacerbating the hardships of the winter season.
Energy Minister German Galushchenko confirmed on social media that the latest offensive targets power generation and transmission facilities nationwide. In response, officials preemptively cut power in several areas to minimize risks from potential infrastructure damage. While details on the full extent of destruction remain limited, local reports confirmed that at least two people lost their lives during the overnight assault.
This renewed onslaught adds urgency to Ukraine’s efforts to protect its energy supply, as the cold weather heightens the humanitarian stakes of the ongoing conflict.
