The head of the EULEX mission, Giovanni Pietro Barbano, has welcomed the arrival of the Fifth Specialized Police Unit (SPU) to Kosovo.
According to the official statement, officers from the European Gendarmerie Force (EUROGENDFOR) will collaborate with the Specialized Police Unit provided by the Polish Police to support EULEX’s mandate and ensure security for all communities during the upcoming elections in Kosovo.
“These officers, coming from the EUROGENDFOR forces, which include personnel from the French National Gendarmerie 🇫🇷, the Italian Carabinieri, the Lithuanian Public Security Service, and the Portuguese National Republican Guard, will work alongside the Specialized Police Unit (SPU) provided by the Polish Police. Their mission is to support stability throughout Kosovo and guarantee security for all communities during the upcoming general elections.”
EULEX operates as the second security responder in Kosovo under the three-tier security mechanism, where the Kosovo Police serves as the first responder, EULEX as the second, and NATO-led KFOR as the third.
