Serbian students, who began their march from Belgrade and spent the night in Inđija, about 40 kilometers from the Serbian capital, are continuing their protest march toward Novi Sad. They are set to join their colleagues from Novi Sad to block bridges on February 1st.
In doing so, they will mark the three-month anniversary of the deaths of 15 people following the collapse of a concrete shelter at the Novi Sad train station.
The students, who set off from Belgrade on January 30th, are expected to reach the Novi Sad train station around 7:00 PM.
The students began their march, which spans approximately 80 kilometers, on Thursday at around 10:30 AM from the Belgrade Faculty of Dramatic Arts. They took breaks in Batajnica, Bova, and Stara Pazova, where they were welcomed by citizens. They arrived in Inđija at about 10:00 PM and spent the night in tents on a sports field.
The students from Belgrade plan to support their colleagues in Novi Sad, who have announced they will block bridges throughout the city on February 1st, marking three months since the tragedy at the city’s train station.
Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dačić said on Tuesday that members of the Ministry of the Interior would provide security for the student march, escorting them with ambulances and trucks carrying drinking water.
The tragedy in Novi Sad sparked a wave of mass protests across Serbia, bringing tens of thousands of people into the streets.
For the past two months, the protests have been led by students, who have blocked dozens of state universities. Their primary demand is criminal and political accountability for the authorities responsible for the accident in Novi Sad, according to reports from REL.
The government and President Aleksandar Vučić claim that the students’ demands have been met.
The protesting students have stated that Vučić is not responsible for fulfilling their demands, adding that their requests have not been addressed, and they will continue their protests.
