Ahmed al-Sharaa has been officially confirmed as the new president of Syria, following major historical changes this week. After gathering support from various military factions that have fought against the regime of Bashar al-Assad, al-Sharaa has received the approval of these groups to assume the presidency, according to Reporteri.net.
In a triumphant speech before military factions and later to the Syrian people, al-Sharaa declared that he would serve not as a leader, but as a servant to the Syrian people. His speech, lasting just over five minutes, emphasized his commitment to ensuring equality for all Syrians and building a shared future for the country.
Al-Sharaa called on Syrians who have been displaced abroad to return and contribute to the reconstruction of their homeland. However, he acknowledged the deep wounds caused by Assad’s regime, which would take time to heal.
In a significant move, Syria’s Constitution, under which the country has been governed until now, has been annulled. A new committee will be formed to draft a new Constitution, though the timeline for this process remains unclear. Additionally, the Syrian Parliament has been dissolved, with a smaller body set to replace it. New elections are expected to take up to four years to take place.
Among the groups officially disbanded is the HTS, once led by al-Sharaa himself.
The Emir of Qatar was the first to visit the new president, and other nations, including Turkey, Jordan, and Lebanon, have pledged support to Syria in its efforts to rebuild after the war.
