Students, professors, and citizens in Novi Sad continue the blockade of Freedom Bridge despite freezing temperatures, demanding change as public support grows.
The blockade of Freedom Bridge in Novi Sad has entered its second day, with a group of students, professors, and citizens spending the night outdoors despite the cold. The protest, which began on February 1, 2025, at 3:00 PM, initially involved simultaneous blockades of Žeželj Bridge and Varadin Bridge until 6:00 PM, when demonstrators converged at Freedom Bridge.
A Growing Movement
Protesters have vowed to continue the blockade until 3:00 PM today, culminating in an open citizens’ assembly. Increasing numbers of demonstrators are gathering near the bridge, where banners such as “The End Comes When the Students Say So” are prominently displayed.
In an effort to maintain order, students and citizens cleaned up all accumulated waste from the first day. Volunteers are also preparing food and hot drinks for those participating in the demonstration.
Organized Support for Students
A major act of solidarity is set to take place around 1:00 PM, when over 200 taxis from Belgrade and other cities will arrive in Novi Sad to transport students home, particularly those who walked from Belgrade to join the protest.
“We are parents, and each of us has a student. A small act from us means a lot to them—it is our duty,” said one taxi driver.
Taxis were also active yesterday, helping exhausted students who suffered blisters and injuries from prolonged walking.
Large-Scale Participation
The protest has seen tens of thousands of people, including farmers with tractors and thousands of motorcyclists, joining the blockade. As momentum builds, the demonstrators remain firm in their demands, underscoring that their movement will not end until their voices are heard.
