On February 22, 2025, the United States proposed a draft resolution to the United Nations General Assembly calling for an “immediate end” to the conflict in Ukraine, but notably, the resolution does not mention respecting Ukraine’s territorial integrity. According to sources from the French news agency AFP, the resolution appeals for a swift cessation of hostilities and advocates for a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia.
US Secretary of State Mark Rubio urged UN member states to support the “simple and historic” resolution, emphasizing its potential to pave the way for peace. The draft text does not delve into the root causes of the conflict, which was noted by Russian Ambassador to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia, who called the resolution a “good idea.”
This proposal comes ahead of the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with the UN General Assembly scheduled to meet on Monday to mark the occasion.
