British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has just addressed MPs in the House of Commons, where he was asked questions regarding Ukraine and its ever-changing relationship with the United States.
According to foreign media, Starmer said he is doing “everything he can” to play his role by keeping “all the key players” in regular contact.
This includes Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump, following their disagreements in the Oval Office last Friday, with Starmer telling the House that he had spoken to Trump three times since their meeting in Washington last week.
“War is the Last Thing We Want”
Starmer was asked about the possibility of British peacekeepers being attacked in Ukraine after a peace agreement and what this could mean for the United Kingdom.
He stated that “this is the last thing anyone wants to see,” writes A2 CNN.
“The whole point of securing a lasting peace and ensuring that any agreement, if there is an agreement to be made, is to avoid conflict and ensure we have peace,” he added.
“The way to ensure peace is to make sure there are guarantees for any agreement that is in place, because the biggest risk of conflict is if Putin thinks he can break any agreement that might be reached,” the British Prime Minister further stated.
No Plan B for Ukraine
The Prime Minister was also asked if he had a backup plan for Ukraine if the United States could not provide sufficient security guarantees to Kyiv.
Starmer said he is focused on “the only important outcome,” according to A2 CNN.
This, he said, is ensuring a lasting peace in Ukraine “which is good for Ukraine, good for Europe, and of course, essential for the United Kingdom.”
