U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has announced that the Trump administration has decided to shut down 83% of the programs offered by USAID.
In a post on the social network “X,” Rubio emphasized that the remaining programs of USAID that will continue will be closely monitored and managed by the Department of State.
“After a six-week review, we are officially canceling 83% of USAID programs. The 5,200 contracts that have now been canceled spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve (and in some cases harmed) the core national interests of the United States. In consultation with Congress, we aim for the remaining 18% of programs that we are keeping (about 1,000) to now be managed more effectively under the Department of State. Thanks to DOGE and our hardworking staff who worked tirelessly to achieve this delayed and historic reform,” Rubio wrote on X.
