European Union leaders have pledged to continue supporting Ukraine with weapons, despite Russia’s efforts to prevent the delivery of Western arms to Kyiv through ongoing ceasefire negotiations.

The leaders of the European bloc will convene in Brussels this Thursday, continuing on March 21, to approve the conclusions of the summit that will outline the EU’s stance on “peace through strength.” This approach emphasizes that Ukraine should be in the strongest possible position, with its military capabilities being key elements in that strategy.

The meeting comes two days after a phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the two leaders agreed on a 30-day pause in attacks on energy infrastructure. However, only hours later, Ukrainian railway agencies confirmed that Russian drones had targeted energy infrastructure linked to the railway system in the Dnipro region.

In normal circumstances, the 27 EU member states would need to approve the conclusions by unanimous consent. However, EU diplomats, speaking anonymously, have indicated that Hungary, which has grown closer to the Kremlin, may distance itself from the consensus, as has occurred in previous EU summits this month.
