Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the U.S. agreement to ease Russian agricultural exports is a weakening of sanctions.
The United States, under President Joe Biden’s leadership, led efforts for broad sanctions against Russia, including measures to limit its oil and gas revenues, such as a $60 per barrel cap on Russian oil exports.
Sources told Reuters that the current administration of President Donald Trump is considering ways to ease sanctions if Moscow agrees to end the war, according to Sky News.
As part of the Black Sea agreement, the White House said it would “help restore Russia’s access to the global market for agricultural and fertilizer exports, lower maritime insurance costs, and improve access to ports and payment systems for these transactions.”
The Kremlin says this depends on the removal of sanctions on financial organizations, vessels, and companies that produce and export food and fertilizers.
Zelensky said that if Russia violates the Black Sea ceasefire agreement, he will ask Donald Trump to impose new sanctions.
The U.S., Ukraine, and Russia have reached an agreement to prevent attacks in the Black Sea.
