Today, April 9, 2025, marks 17 years since the adoption of the Constitution of the Republic of Kosovo, the highest legal act that guarantees the fundamental rights and freedoms of the country’s citizens.
The Constitution was ratified in 2008 and came into force on June 15 of the same year.
Kosovo’s Constitution is a reflection of the plan by former President Martti Ahtisaari and ensures specific rights for minority groups, creating a safer and fairer environment for all Kosovo citizens.
It also defines Kosovo as a state neutral toward religion (Article 8), contains 14 chapters, and 162 articles.
In honor of the adoption of the Constitution, April 9 is celebrated as a national holiday in Kosovo, and today the country’s institutions observe a day off.
