Dear members of the ERO Board,
Today is not an ordinary workday. Your decision today carries far more weight than just a technical decision. It is a socio-economic, political, and crucial decision for hundreds of thousands of citizens and thousands of businesses in Kosovo.
The increase in energy prices over the past few years has deeply affected every area of life, from bread, oil, and milk to medicines, children’s education, and loan payments. This is no longer just a discussion about kilowatts and tariffs. It is a discussion about the social impacts and the economic functioning of our country.
In recent years, purchasing power has been severely impacted. Our businesses have lost competitiveness. Imports have risen to unprecedented levels, and the trade deficit in goods has exceeded 5 billion euros annually. Employment has decreased in the last year. Migration has increased. All of these are sensitive indicators closely linked to the cost of energy and how this sector is managed.
Therefore, I make the following public appeal:
Do not approve any decision that leads to further increases in electricity tariffs. Such a decision would have severe consequences for our fragile economy.
Do not make decisions that increase tariffs again without a functional Assembly. The ERO is accountable to the Assembly of Kosovo, which today is not functional. This should mean self-restraint and respect for the institutional situation in the country.
Take seriously the voice of thousands of citizens, hundreds of businesses, economic organizations, trade unions, and elected representatives who have reacted against this decision. Never before has the ERO received so many letters and responses, and this should be a strong signal for reflection.
If you fail to find a solution without raising electricity prices, seek solutions in collaboration with the government and other institutions. We need a solution that does not generate inflation and does not increase the burden on citizens and businesses.
Today, you are not just regulators. Today, you are decision-makers for the economic and social fate of Kosovo. Do not separate the country from the people, nor energy from social justice.
With respect and responsibility.
