The eighth attempt to constitute the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo failed again on Tuesday, April 29. A ninth attempt is scheduled for tomorrow, continuing the stalemate.

Since April 15, the Assembly has convened every 48 hours, making tomorrow’s session the ninth in a row.

Albulena Haxhiu, Vetëvendosje’s nominee for Assembly Speaker, has failed to be elected six times, yet her name is expected to be proposed once again. So far, there are no signs from Vetëvendosje of changing its position, according to Reporteri.net.

“I wasn’t self-nominated; this is the party’s stance,” Haxhiu stated when asked why she doesn’t urge Albin Kurti to propose another candidate.

“Vetëvendosje has the exclusive right to change or propose another name. We are in a clear position.”

She further claimed that no matter who Vetëvendosje nominated, other parties would find a reason to oppose them:

“Even if we proposed Saranda Bogujevci, they’d say we’re misusing a war survivor.”

On the opposing side, PDK, LDK, and AAK have repeatedly urged Vetëvendosje to propose a different candidate.
Despite some alternative names gaining informal support, none of the opposition parties have changed their stance.

Vlora Çitaku (PDK) accused Vetëvendosje of turning the Assembly into a “circus” with repeated failed sessions every 48 hours.

“Voting isn’t done by force. Never in Kosovo’s history has a party tried to forcibly impose a candidate,” she said on A2 CNN.
“Yes, Vetëvendosje has the right to propose a name, but it must also build the necessary consensus.”

Jehona Lushtaku-Sadriu (LDK) also affirmed:

“LDK will not support Albulena Haxhiu. We’ve been consistent since the beginning, and we’re not changing our position.”

In light of this ongoing impasse, calls are growing for President Vjosa Osmani to take initiative by convening party leaders in a joint meeting to seek a compromise.

Tomorrow’s session is scheduled for 10:00 AM.
