The foundation stone has been laid for the construction of affordable housing units in Podujeva, marking a key step in Kosovo’s national housing initiative.
Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti emphasized that the government’s offer exceeds the demand from municipalities. He noted that while the central government is ready to support, many municipalities are failing to take advantage of the program.
“Only about one in three municipalities applies for affordable housing support. Thankfully, Podujeva is one of them and is now moving forward with implementation,” said Kurti.
The project in Podujeva includes two residential buildings totaling 133 housing units 106 designated as affordable housing, and 27 as social housing.
Deputy Minister of Environment Jeton Raka expressed concern over the lack of interest from local governments:
“Out of 38 municipalities, only 13 have applied. This is deeply disappointing and reflects a lack of responsibility by some local leaders who are denying a fundamental right to housing for residents in their areas.”
Currently, only four municipalities Istog, Podujeva, Gjilan, and Peja have been selected for implementation.
