U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov today on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Malaysia.

Following the meeting, Rubio told reporters that he expressed “disappointment and frustration” to his Russian counterpart over the lack of progress in resolving the war in Ukraine, according to The Moscow Times.

“I reiterated what the president (Donald Trump) said, simultaneously disappointment and frustration over the lack of progress,” Rubio stated, describing his conversation with Lavrov as “open and important.” Moscow, meanwhile, characterized the meeting as a “substantive and open exchange of views.”

“New Idea” from Russia for Ukraine

AFP reported that Rubio mentioned Lavrov had shared “a new idea” concerning Ukraine, though he did not provide details on its content.

“It’s not a new approach. It’s a new idea or concept that I will take with me to present to the president. It’s not something that automatically leads to peace, but it could open a door towards a solution,” Rubio said, according to AFP.
