Berlin, July 9, 2025 — German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced that Germany is prepared to purchase additional U.S.-made Patriot missile defense systems and provide them to Ukraine, in a major show of continued support for Kyiv’s air defense capabilities.
Speaking at an international conference dedicated to supporting Ukraine, Merz stated that Germany is actively exploring the acquisition of more Patriot systems from the United States with the intent of transferring them to Ukrainian forces.
“We are also ready to purchase additional Patriot systems from the United States to make them available to Ukraine,” Chancellor Merz declared during the event, which included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other senior leaders.
Merz revealed that he has personally raised the issue with U.S. President Donald Trump in recent discussions.
“Last week, I asked President Trump to send Patriot systems to Ukraine. The Americans do need some themselves—but they have many. It is still unclear whether a shipment will be finalized,” Merz added.
This move would mark another significant step by Germany in bolstering Ukraine’s air defenses amid ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks, and it underscores growing transatlantic cooperation aimed at enhancing Ukraine’s battlefield resilience.
