Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, accompanied by members of the outgoing cabinet, paid tribute early this morning at the grave of renowned Albanian activist Adem Demaçi, on the seventh anniversary of his passing.
Laying flowers in honor of Demaçi, Kurti praised him as a symbol of national dedication and unwavering commitment to freedom and justice.
“Journalist and writer, activist and intellectual, persecuted and imprisoned for his beliefs, laureate for peace, political representative of freedom fighters, thinker and critic — Adem Demaçi was deeply embodied with the Albanian national cause. He was a unique personality, in his activism and language, in his selflessness for others. Glory to the life and work of Adem Demaçi!” said Kurti during the commemoration.
Legacy of a Freedom Icon
Adem Demaçi passed away on July 26, 2018. He is widely revered for his lifelong activism and tireless advocacy for the freedom and unification of Albanians. Demaçi spent 28 years in prison under the Yugoslav regime for his political beliefs and became a symbol of resistance and conscience in Kosovo and beyond.
In recognition of his historic role, the state organized national ceremonies following his death, and Kosovo declared three days of mourning.
