The leaders of Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to hold ceasefire talks following days of deadly border violence.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he spoke with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting PM Phumtham Wechayachai, warning them that no trade deals with the U.S. would be made unless the fighting stopped.

Trump also threatened a 36% tariff on most Thai and Cambodian exports starting August 1. Both countries later made significant trade offers to the U.S.

Hun Manet confirmed Cambodia’s agreement to an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire.” Thailand expressed willingness for talks but emphasized the need for “sincere intention” from Cambodia.

The conflict stems from a century-old border dispute. The UN has condemned the violence and offered to assist in reaching a peaceful resolution.
