Former Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader, who had been serving an 18-year prison sentence at Lipovica Prison, has been released on parole, according to a decision made today by the Sisak County Court.
The court confirmed the release, which was decided during a session of the judicial council, Croatian media outlet Jutarnji list reported on Tuesday.
Sanader, once one of the most powerful political figures in Croatia, was convicted on multiple corruption charges. Despite his long sentence, he had previously been spotted in Zagreb and Kutina, benefiting from the privileges granted by the Law on the Execution of Prison Sentences.
Today’s court session in Sisak concluded that Sanader meets the necessary conditions for early release, meaning he will not serve the full duration of his sentence behind bars.
